The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino, scheduled to open later this year, is on the Las Vegas Strip between the highly publicized CityCenter development and the Bellagio. Once complete, the property will consist of two opulent towers that will soar over 50 stories above the city skyline. The development will contain approximately 2,000 condo-hotel units and 1,000 hotel rooms. In addition, The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino will have over 150,000 square feet of convention space, a 75,000 square foot casino, a 1,800 seat theater, a multi-level luxury pool area, and a plethora of high-end bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Building on the Las Vegas Strip poses different challenges compared to new construction in other metropolitan areas. Due to the short supply of land, The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino is being built on top of a 1,800 space underground parking garage. Additionally, the entire development was designed to be built around the already existing 11-story Jockey Club. The Jockey Club and The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino have different owners, which poses a unique situation, but they have worked closely with one another to find solutions that are beneficial to both parties.

Since the beginning, RJA/Las Vegas has been a vital part of the design team. During the initial design stages, RJA was in charge of preparing the Fire Protection Report, developing Request for Alternate Methods, producing design specifications for the fire alarm and sprinkler systems, and creating master egress drawings for the entire property. Currently, the resort is undergoing design revisions throughout the project and RJA is working non-stop to update and amend the Fire Protection Report and Egress Drawings as necessary based upon the project re-design. Once construction is close to completion, RJA will be in charge of the commissioning of the smoke control systems, acting as the Mechanical Quality Assurance Agency for the entire property.

Some “fun facts” about the Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino:

• The building has over 74,000 automatic sprinklers.
• There is 1,510,800 lineal feet of Fire Sprinkler piping in the building – the equivalent of 286 miles of piping.
• The podium of the Cosmopolitan has 46 separate fire sprinkler systems.
• The parking garage has 51 dry pipe fire sprinkler systems.
• The East and West Towers have 102 separate sprinkler systems.
• The Cosmopolitan placed the largest order of custom cut dry pipe sprinkler heads in North America at over 7,000 total heads.
• The resort has over 1,000 fire hose valves in cabinets.
• The Cosmopolitan is the first fully sprinkler protected parking stacker system in Las Vegas.
• The Cosmopolitan held the largest single fire sprinkler contract under one roof in North America.
• Project is built on an 8.5 acre footprint with building on zero lot line.
• Project is approximately 6,200,000 sf or the equivalent of 142 acres of development constructed on an 8.5 acre footprint
• Over 5 miles of off-site electrical duct bank were installed to provide permanent power to the site.
• Parking garage will accommodated approximately 3,800 cars all located on 5 levels of subterranean parking.
• Slurry wall construction basement walls are the first of its kind in Nevada.
• Mass excavation with matt footings equaled 903,505 cubic yards.
• 82,136 truck loads were required to remove dirt from the site.
• The project will use approximately 366,000 cubic yards of structural concrete. Enough concrete to pour a sidewalk 4” thick by 4’ wide and 7.5 million feet long, or about 1417 miles (the distance from Las Vegas to Vancouver).
• The project will used approximately 80 million pounds of concrete and slurry wall reinforcing steel, and 94 million pounds of structural and misc. steel.
• The exterior of the building has over 1,600,000 sq. ft. of glass enclosure
• The building has 75 elevators, 14 escalators and over 80 separate stairs.
