Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department awarded Jensen Grant
Grant will support public education initiative for people with disabilities
March 19, 2010 – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department of Michigan as the recipient of the 2010 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant. The $5000 grant will support the department’s fire and life safety public education initiative for people with disabilities, called Customized Outreach Project.
The NFPA awards this grant annually to support a community-wide fire and life safety education program or campaign.
Customized Outreach Project recognizes that traditional fire safety messages do not always meet the needs of every audience and will create customized fire and fall prevention messages and home escape plans for people with disabilities. The campaign includes installing smoke alarms designed for people with disabilities and offering presentations that deliver the customized information. This project will also make use of NFPA’s Remembering When™ and NFPA educational resources for people with disabilities.
The Jensen Grant was named for Rolf H. Jensen, founder of RJA Group, Inc., one of the largest fire protection consulting firms in the world. Recipients are chosen based on these criteria: demonstration of a plan to implement a community-wide fire and life safety program/campaign aimed at the general public or a targeted group; clearly stated goals and objectives; staff assigned to implement the program/campaign; and a final report, including an overview of the project, number of people reached, materials used or developed, media coverage, life saves, etc.
NFPA has been a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, building, and life safety to the public since 1896. The mission of the international nonprofit organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.
