As the leading global fire and life safety consultant, Rolf Jensen & Associates (RJA) is pleased to have been selected by the Chinese Government to be a part of the design team for the Expo stadium for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.

The Expo stadium is located in the core area of the planning district of the Shanghai World Expo 2010, adjacent to the Huang Pu River. It will be a permanent building and will host a variety of large-scale entertainment performances and activities during the Expo, while meeting the follow-up and sustainable development needs after the Expo utilization.

The building has a total construction area of 125,945 square meters. It consists of two parts: an 18,000-seat, single-story multipurpose theater surrounded by six-story buildings on the ground, two stories with a mixed function of retail\car park\iceskating and others underground.

As the fire and life safety consultant, RJA’s scope of work for this landmark building is the development of a performance-based design approach to address the fire protection issues. These issues include the extended fire and smoke compartment sizes, smoke control system analyses, fire alarm and fire suppression systems design, people evacuation modeling for the arena area and smoke control analysis for the sunken square underground. The goal is to achieve both the fire and life safety requirements while keeping the building aesthetic in place.
