Fire Protection Engineers Represented in Grade School Career Day

Posted Wed January 25, 2012 Fire Protection Engineers Represented in Grade School Career Day

In late 2011, Stephen Hill of the RJA Baltimore office participated in a local elementary school’s career day. He represented fire protection engineers to groups of 4th and 5th graders and even got a package of handwritten fan mail thanking him for his presentation.

The students were able to relate to Stephen’s job as some of them even had engineers in their families. They learned about smoke modeling, different types of fires, building codes and fire walls between town homes. Students were captivated by footage of a burning couch and seeing the inner workings of a fire alarm.

The grade schoolers walked away with a better understanding of how fire protection engineers impact buildings and fire safety. More than one student wrote that they were even considering becoming fire protection engineers after Stephen’s career day visit.
