RJA Involved in Award Winning Kennedy Space Center Project

Posted Thu October 28, 2010 RJA Involved in Award Winning Kennedy Space Center Project

RJA was recently involved in an award winning project at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (Architect: BRPH).  This project involved the Operations and Checkout Building, one of the center’s facilities for processing horizontally integrated payloads. Here payloads are received, assembled and integrated before they are moved to the LC-39 area. The O&C Building is used for the refurbishment of the space vehicle after return from a mission.

A Brief History of the Facility:
1960’s: Gemini capsules and all the Apollo Lunar Modules and Command Modules were integrated and tested in this facility.
1970’s: the facility was used to integrate and test the Apollo Soyuz Test Project Mission and the Skylab Mission.
1980’s and 1990’s: the facility was used to integrate and test all of Spacelab missions.
1990’s – 2005: the facility has been used to build the S0, P1 and S1 trusses on the International Space Station KSC headquarters building.

RJA provided automatic sprinkler design and construction administration services for the renovation of the O&C Building for the next launch vehicle.

This project received the following awards and is featured in a spread for BRPH’s annual Yearbook:

Best of 2009 Award for Renovation from Southeast Construction Magazine
Best of 2010 Build America Award for Federal & Heavy Renovation from Associated General Contractors of America
